Road to Reading

Start your child on The Road to Reading. The Children’s Librarians at the Northport-East Northport Public Library can help you nurture your child’s early literacy skills. The Road to Reading is a progressive series of programs for children and parents. Offered throughout the school year, Sept.-May, these programs help children develop listening and thinking skills, along with a lifelong love of reading.
Check the Preschool Series Programs 2011 - 2012: Road to Reading brochure to see what programs are offered. Your Northport-East Northport Library card is required for registration. You may choose one program per child per season.
You may choose one series program per child each month. Children must be the appropriate age for the program. Registration is available online.

New Moms
Babies birth-11 months with mother
First-time mothers and their babies network with other new moms and take part in a discussion of pertinent topics guided by a certified social worker. The last week of the session will be a Mother Goose Time as well as a presentation of good books for young children. (2 hours)
Rock-a-Bye Readers
Babies not yet walking, with adult; no siblings
Bond with your baby and learn rhymes, songs and poems that teach the early literacy skill of
phonological awareness. Help your baby learn the sounds that are the building blocks of words. (30 min.)
Stories in Motion
Walkers up to 23 months with adult; no siblings
Energetic toddlers are kinesthetic learners, who learn best when they are actively engaged. Enjoy action stories and music and use rhythm instruments to reinforce the natural rhythms of language and strengthen phonological awareness. (30 min.)
Tales for Toddlers
Children 2-3 years with adult; no siblings
Experience a beginning storytime that will emphasize narrative skills when we share books and flannelboard stories. Read a board book together to give your child an opportunity to understand that the print they see consists of the same words they speak and hear. Participate in a hands-on activity. (30 min)

Sing songs and rhymes as you and your child listen to musical stories selected to emphasize the natural rhythm of language in this interactive group
experience. (30 min)
Family Fun
Children ages 1-3 years with adult; siblings welcome
Through play, children learn and develop fine and gross motor skills. Families can share a circle storytime and enjoy an art experience. (60 min.)
Family Storytime
Children 1-3 years with adult; siblings welcome
Listen to stories, sing songs and use rhythm
instruments with your family in this beginning
storytime. Read board books together to develop
print motivation and awareness so that your child
will understand that the print they see consists
of words. (30 min.)
1,2,3 Play with Me
Children 1-3 years with adult; siblings welcome
Through play, children learn and develop fine
and gross motor skills. Families can share a circle
storytime, enjoy an art experience and talk to child development specialist. (60 min.)

Children 4-5 years not yet in kindergarten; independent program
Children listen to stories, sing songs and rhymes that increase vocabulary and letter knowledge, and participate in hands-on activities to recreate the
narrative elements of the story. (30 min.)

Children with adult; siblings welcome
Children with their adults can come ready to sit
and listen to some great stories. Wear your pajamas and bring your favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal. (30 min.) No registration required.
Tales at Ten

Stop in on Friday mornings for this drop-in storytime. We'll read stories, sing songs, share rhymes and fingerplays, and have fun in this interactive program for families. (30 min.) No registration required, however space is limited.
