THE LONG ISLANDER (1839-), THE NORTHPORT JOURNAL (1941-), THE OBSERVER (1956-), THE RECORD (1995-), and THE TIMES OF NORTHPORT (2004-); These five weekly newspapers provide thorough coverage of events and issues in the community. Back issues are preserved on microfilm.
NEWSDAY: Long Island's newspaper is another source of community news. Back issues are available on microfilm and issues from 1985 to the present are online.
LOCAL HISTORY FILE: Local news articles on current and past issues are grouped by topic. Trace the history of the Housing Help project or follow the progress of the latest Northport Village roadwork.

ASHAROKEN NEWS, and THE NORTHPORT VILLAGE RESIDENTS'ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER: Refer to these publications for concise summaries of village happenings.
LOCAL HISTORY MATERIALS
LOCAL HISTORY CENTER: Books, pamphlets, periodicals, photographs, oral histories, historical census data, maps, and a clipping file invite exploration of the region's rich heritage. Display cases present exhibits chronicling the community's past and a bulletin board hosts announcements from local history organizations.

THE LIBRARY: The Northport-East Northport Public Library's monthly newsletter is the indispensable guide to library activities and events.
NORTHPORT-EAST NORTHPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING MINUTES: Monthly meeting minutes are on file at the Northport Library Reference Desk.
LIBRARY ARCHIVES: From the 1880 Northport Literary and Social Union to the present, the Library's history is documented in minutes, ledgers, scrapbooks, and photographs.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT RECORDS
NORTHPORT VILLAGE BOARDS MEETING MINUTES: The Library receives copies of the meeting minutes of all village boards.
VILLAGE AND TOWN BUDGETS: Track tax dollars through these annual compilations of expenditures and receipts.
VILLAGE OF NORTHPORT, VILLAGE OF ASHAROKEN, and TOWN OF HUNTINGTON CODES: The official, codified ordinances are supplemented by zoning maps. Northport's code is online at http://gcp.esub.net and Huntington's code is online at http://town.huntington.ny.us.
RESIDENTIAL CODE OF NEW YORK STATE: Turn to this volume for applicable building codes.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENTS and OTHER GOVERNMENT REPORTS: The Library is a depository for land use documents required by the government. The Comprehensive Master Plan for the Village of Asharoken is one recent addition.
RECYCLING AND REFUSE ACTIVITIES
HUNTINGTON'S TRASH PICK UP AND RECYCLING CALENDAR and RECYCLING BIN LABELS: Pick up these items at either library building.
BATTERIES: Dispose of used batteries in recycling bins at the Library.
EYEGLASSES: Donations of eyeglasses may be placed in containers in the lobbies of both library buildings.

VOTER REGISTRATION FORMS and ABSENTEE BALLOT APPLICATIONS: These forms are available for library, school, village, and general elections.
DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLE FORMS: A selection of forms is on hand to speed up processing.
NOTARIES PUBLIC: The Reference Desk maintains a list of nearby notaries for your use.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLICATIONS: Learn about the school district, its operations,
educational programs, and services through board of education meeting minutes, the annual budget, the Superintendent's Report, school policies and by-laws, the current calendar and directory, and the Our Schools newsletter.
STATISTICAL DATA: New York: The State of Learning: Statistical Profiles of Public School Districts is the source of Newsday’s comparative school data and delivers the numbers from average class size to Regents English scores. School Report Cards are online at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/irts/reportcard/home.shtml.
CONTINUING EDUCATION and RECREATION: Catalogs of adult education offerings are kept in the Career Center.
NORTHPORTHIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOKS: The Library's collection documents high school highlights from 1935 to the present.
TUTORIAL ROOMS: Both library buildings offer quiet rooms for school-sponsored and literacy tutoring. Applications and guidelines for use of the rooms are available at the Reference Desk.
NAUTICAL DATA
NAUTICAL ALMANACS AND CHARTS, TIDE AND CURRENT TABLES, and GUIDES TO MARINAS AND FISHING GROUNDS: Navigate the local waters with these resources, which include Tides & Currents 3.0 on CD-ROM and the periodical The Fisherman: Long Island, Metro NY Edition.
NEW AND USED BOAT PRICE GUIDES: BUG, N.A.D.A, and ABOS Marine Blue Book price guides can assist that search for the perfect boat.
MAPS AND POPULATION STATISTICS
TOPOLOGICAL, PLANEMETERIC, and STREET MAPS: Trace the contours and features of the community from Eaton's Neck Point to Stoothoff Road on U.S. Geological Survey and N.Y. Department of Transportation maps. Hagstrom street maps will help you reach points in between.
Long Island Population Survey: LIPA 's annual estimates update the federal census.
DIRECTORIES
BUSINESS: Dun's Regional Business Directory, Dun and Bradstreet Million Dollar Directory, and D & B Microcosm Nassau/Suffolk, an online resource, all give basic information on local companies—address, telephone number, key people, number of employees. They are important marketing tools as well.
REAL ESTATE: COMPS: A Compilation of Monthly Property Sales lists data on recent residential sales in Huntington and Smithtown.
PHYSICIANS: The Official ASMS Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists includes the educational background, post-degree training, and affiliations of area doctors.
TELEPHONE: The Library owns a collection of Yellow Book Community Telephone Directories for Northport and East Northport dating from 1959 to the present. The blue pages in the back of the book are a good source of local information. Copies of current books are available at the Circulation Desk for residents to take home.
LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS INFORMATION
LOCAL DIRECTORIES: The Suffolk Sourcebook, http:llenigma.suffolk.lib.ny.us/sbook/ sb.htm, and the Community Resource Database of Long Island, www.crdli.org, are valuable online guides to organizations and services available to residents of the community, from senior citizen programs to the Northport Running Club.
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ASSOCIATIONS: When unable to locate an organization, use the information in this national directory, published both in print and online, to reach the local affiliate.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DIRECTORY: The Northport chapter produces a community directory that includes useful lists of organizations and businesses.
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES: Keep apprised of the activities of local organizations at community bulletin boards and brochure displays in both library buildings.
MEETING SPACE: Meeting rooms are available for local nonprofit organizations' programs. Applications for meeting room use are at the Reference Desk.
CULTURAL AND RECREATIONAL RESOURCES
ART EXHIBITS: The work of local artists is displayed in the Library's galleries.
LITERARY BEACONS COLLECTION: Books published by local authors are collected by the Library and can be identified by a lighthouse label on the spine.
LONG ISLAND TOURISM COLLECTION: Discover the region's historical, cultural, culinary, and recreational gems in brochures, flyers, and books. Peruse Newsday's Fun Book, the ultimate guide for enjoying Long Island.
LIBRARY PROGRAMS: Throughout the year the Library presents programs featuring local talents and topics.

REFERENCE DESK INFORMATION FILES
To support residents' varied interests and needs, the Reference staff maintains extensive files of names, addresses, and telephone numbers of local government agencies, social services, organizations, and clubs, as well as calendars of forthcoming events and public transportation schedules.
For help with any questions related to the community or about the use of the above resources, stop by or call the Reference Desk in either the Northport or the East Northport building. Librarians are at the desk, always ready to assist.
