Introduction

Library Services of Special Interest to Seniors
Throughout the year, the Library presents a variety of programs and activities of interest to seniors.  Musical and theatrical performances, current event discussions, and speakers on health, finance, and legal issues are just a few of the many topics featured. Be sure to check our monthly newsletter, The Library (available in regular or large print), for these and other events. Or call us for information—you will always get a PERSON on the other end of the line!

Reference
Our Reference Librarians are highly-trained information specialists ready to answer your questions in person, by telephone, or via email. Whether you want to find a telephone number or zip code, another good book by a favorite author, company financial data, or information about a physician—for any of your information needs— our Reference Librarians will provide you with confidential, professional, one-on-one assistance.

Internet & Email
The Library provides library cardholders with email accounts. Speak to any of our Librarians to sign up. Also, ask about our popular Internet User's Group.

"Live Librarian"
Library closed? Connect to the Library's homepage at www.nenpl.org and click on the "Live Librarian" link to reach a Suffolk County Reference Librarian. After discussing your question, a Librarian will use an array of Internet subscriptions and databases to meet your information needs. The Librarian can forward web links and web pages to your home computer.

Book Discussion Groups
Do you like to exchange ideas with fellow bibliophiles? Join one of our evening book groups, Novel Ideas or Short Story Central, and enjoy monthly discussions with other adults. Call the Library for further information.

Computer Classes
Acquire basic, intermediate, and advanced computer knowledge by attending classes taught by professional instructors and our own Library staff. Learn about the Internet, email, Microsoft Word, Photoshop, digital photography, and other computer topics. Some classes may require registration and/or a nominal fee.

Current Events & Historical Discussions
Consider historical people and events and share your views on current issues in our popular discussion programs with Michael Libresco-D'lnnocenzo, professor of history at Hofstra University. Each fall, Mr. Libresco-D'lnnocenzo hosts a Friday morning film/discussion series on varying historical topics. In the spring, current events are explored in his evening series. Look for details in the Library newsletter.

Friday Movies for Adults
Come to the Library twice a month and spend an afternoon at the movies. We show a variety of current, popular films—dramas, comedies, musicals, and more—and attendees receive a coupon to use at our Library Cafe.

Book-A-Trip
Leave the driving to us! Travel with other Library patrons on day trips to enriching area destinations. Recent visits have included the French Culinary Institute, Central Park, Newport, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Philadelphia. Fees vary depending on the site visited and luncheon location.

55/Alive Mature Driver Program
Refresh your driving skills and receive a discount on your auto insurance by participating in classes led by AARP volunteers. This program is offered during day or evening hours and a fee is required.

Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program
Volunteers trained by the Suffolk County Office for the Aging will answer your questions about Medicare, supplementary insurance, and HMOs designed for Medicare recipients. There is no charge for this service.

Blood Pressure Check
The first Wednesday of every month, a nurse from the Visiting Nurse Service is available to check your blood pressure at no charge.

AARP Tax Aid (February-April)
Each Thursday and Friday morning during tax season, AARP counselors trained by the IRS are on hand to assist with your income tax preparation. There is no charge for this service.

Homeward Bound Program
Are you or someone you know unable to visit the Library because of a temporary or permanent medical condition?  We would be happy to provide library service to you at your home. You can tell us what materials you want, or have our Outreach Librarians choose materials for you based on your interests. Materials are delivered and picked up by a Library courier. This is a free and confidential service.

Helpful Assists
Make use of the many "extras" we provide for our patrons. Magnified computer screens, a scanning and reading device, and assistive listening devices for programs are available for your use. You can also borrow reading glasses at the Reference Desk in case you've left yours at home.

Older Americans Month
During the month of May, in observance of Older Americans Month, the Library offers educational and entertaining programs of particular interest to seniors. Look for details in the Library's May newsletter.

In addition to these services, the Library has special collections of books, newspapers, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs, videos, and computer databases, all of which make the Library a vital source for all of your information needs. And if you ever need assistance using any of the Library's services, one of our staff members—easily identified by a gold name badge—will be happy to help you.

Make the Library a daily destination - the coffee's always on in our Library Cafe!
