Career coach Michael Coritsidis will share his "7 Steps to Employment in To­day's Economy" at the Northport Library on March 1.The career coach advised job seekers to adjust their expectations, as much as they may want another six-figure salary that employers may not be willing to offer. He has developed a "WEWE" exercise, or "Where Else, What Else," for individuals to list their transferable skills, break them down and figure out what other careers they can transfer to.

In its November 2009 issue, Library Journal announced its second round of national library ratings, once again ranking the Northport-East Northport Public Library among the top 3.5% of the nation's public libraries scored by the LJ Index 'and naming it a "Four-Star Library" among "America's Star Libraries."

"Books as bridges"

Librarian, Doris Gebel, editor of Crossing Boundaries with Children's Books, introduced patrons to award-winning books from around the world this past Tuesday as part of a month-long exhibit at Northport Public Library. The display, called "Children Between Worlds," was prepared by the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany and features children's books about peace and tolerance.

Of the 55 public libraries in Nassau County, 18 have undergone extensive renovations since 2000. In Suffolk, 13 of the county's 56 libraries have undergone either a face-lift or constructed a new building in the past three years. Usage is increasing, too. In Nassau, for example, public library visits increased 8.7 percent from 2000 to 2003, when the new wave of construction closed some buildings and relocated others; in Suffolk, visits increased 9.4 percent from 2001 to 2005.

For almost eight years, the 11-foot monumnt stood over all the patrons that visited the library. In 2005, after significant weathering, the wooden statue had to be taken down. An intitiative, "Bring Back The Bear," has risen to erect a bronze copy of the original work.

For more than 60 years, Antoine de Saint Exupéry's The Little Prince has advised readers to think clearly with their hearts. While ranking as one of the world's most widely read books, it was not commonly known that The Little Prince was written in New York and not in Saint Exupéry's native France.

During World War II, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a charismatic French author and aviator in self-imposed exile from his homeland, rented the Bevin House, a rambling Victorian mansion in Eaton's Neck, and wrote The Little Prince, the timeless tale of a chance encounter between a stranded aviator and an otherworldly child.
