ADA Publications about the ADA, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other issues related to persons with disabilities are available in the
ADA special collection located in the main reading room of each library.

Adult Learner icon
Adult Learner This collection is intended for adults who need
special materials in two major areas: Basic Literacy and English for
Speakers of Other Languages. Basic Literacy provides tools for adult
learners to read and write while English for Speakers of Other Languages
(ESOL) assists patrons to learn to speak English. Books, audiocassettes,
videos and computer software are available. Study guides that include
citizenship information and test preparation are also available in these
collections.

Patrons may apply for tutoring on a one-to-one basis through Literacy Suffolk, Inc. For more information visit the Literacy Suffolk website. Student and tutor applications are available at the Reference Desk.

Aaron Kramer The Aaron Kramer Collection represents the complete work
of Aaron Kramer (1921-1997), Long Island educator, translator, poet, and
author who contributed significantly to the study of verse. The collection,
housed in the Northport Library is a gift from resident Philip Kleinberg.

Art & Architecture A county-wide resource, the Library's renowned
collection of books, magazines, auction catalogs, and online databases
serves the professional, student, and amateur equally. Designated a
subject specialty center for art and architecture in the 1960s, the Northport
Public Library continues its commitment to maintaining a comprehensive

Asharoken Garden Club icon
Asharoken Garden Club This special collection, gathered by
members of the Asharoken Garden Club, was gifted to the Library in 1999
for all Northport-East Northport community gardeners who wish to reap the garden lore and wisdom which has helped their gardens flourish. The
garden club donates money annually to allow us to purchase additional
books on gardening topics.

George E. Beatty Jr. Architecture Collection
George E. Beatty, Jr. Architecture Collection
A memorial collection named for Library architect George E. Beatty, Jr. and dedicated in 2002, this comprehensive collection of architectural works enhances our strong collection of resources in this field. The collection features books on American architecture, notable architects, professional standards, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. This collection is
housed in the Northport Library.

Biography IconBiographies Life stories, books about renowned historical
figures as well as current history-makers, and autobiographies are shelved as one collection in the biography sections of each library.

Boating This county-wide resource was initially developed to support the
nautical interests of the community. This extensive collection now
provides boaters of all types with unique resources. Books
coveringpurchasing, safety, navigation, construction, maintenance, and
cruising are just some of the subjects featured in this collection.

Rex Brasher's Birds & Trees of North America This twelve-volume set
of hand-painted bird illustrations is number thirty-five of one hundred
completed between 1929 and 1932 by Rex Brasher, one of the foremost
bird artists of the twentieth century. It was donated to the Library by the

Sidney Bevin family.

Buisness iconBusiness Financial newsletters, magazines, handbooks, and
directories are available for reference in the Ray Freygang Business
Center at the Northport Library.

Bygone Bestseller IconBygone Bestsellers This fiction collection joins works by authors
who have made the headlines with books that have mass printings and
vast readership. The Bygone Bestsellers are designated with labels
indicating the year the fiction work topped the charts.

Career Icon
Career Our Career Center is designed to assist patrons in
preparing for a career and obtaining a job. Literature, audio-visual
materials and computer programs are available to enhance one's search. A comprehensive collection of college selection and financial aid resources will assist those preparing for higher education.

The New Virtual Career Information Center was created with the job seeker in mind and brings order and organization to the maze of career resources available on the Internet. This virtual source helps the job seeker to obtain and assimilate relevant information in order to best enhance his/her job needs.

Consumer Before you shop, stop by the Consumer Center for product
reviews and price guides to the things you buy. This collection includes
magazines and books.

Computer IconComputer Located in the Computer Center at the Northport
library building, this collection of books covers levels of interest from
novice computer users to aspiring programmers. This collection includes
manuals to answer your software questions and books to educate
computer users about proper hardware use and maintenance.

Enjoy Long Island With each season, brochures and books are placed on
special display for library users who wish to take advantage of Long
Island's many tourist attractions, sporting events, historic sites, and
cultural activities.

Fiction The fiction collection focuses on literature including contemporary
fiction, classics, standard titles, diverse genres, and special interests.

Foreign Language A shared and rotating collection of books on long-term
loan from our Suffolk Cooperative Library System, this multilingual
collection is enhanced with regular subscriptions to popular magazines in
French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Buisness iconRay Freygang Ray Freygang, who died in 1991, was an active user
of the Library's financial newspapers and other business reference
materials. He made a bequest to the Library in his will. His gift helps us to

maintain a strong collection of business resources.

Health IconHealth Directories of hospitals and physicians; medical
encyclopedias, dictionaries and handbooks; prescription and non-
prescription drug resources; and disease-and condition-specific" books
are included in this circulating and reference collection.

Jack Kerouac iconJack Kerouac Beat author Jack Kerouac lived in Northport
during the late 1950s and early 1960s and was a frequent visitor to the
Library. The Library maintains an extensive collection of resources by and
about Kerouac and, in addition, owns some unique items related to the
writer. A comprehensive bibliography published by the Library is available

online and upon request.

Large PrintLarge Print The Large Print Collection includes fiction and
non-
fiction books published in a larger type size to assist patrons who
have difficulty reading smaller print.

Literary Beacons iconLiterary Beacons Authors of a wide variety of works have
enriched our community's literary heritage. The Literary Beacons Collection recognizes published books of authors who are living in or have lived in
the area served by the Library.

Local History IconLocal History Delve into the rich history of our community, Long
Island, and the Library itself in the Local History Center. Along with
reference and circulating books and media, the center houses local history
periodicals, genealogy resources, materials on historic preservation, historic photographs, a clipping file, the Tracks Through Time Oral History Collection, and archival records.

Magazines The magazine collection includes a broad range of general
interest titles which supplement the book collection for informational
and
recreational reading. Magazines are an important source of new ideas,
topics, and consumer information.

Mysteries icon
Mysteries The Mystery Collection includes whodunnits by classic
authors such as Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, Raymond Chandler, as well as contemporary crime creators such as Robert Parker, Sue Grafton, and P.D. James.

New Books The New Book Collection houses the Library's most recent
acquisitions of fiction and non-fiction books.

Non-Fiction The Non-Fiction collection is comprised of factual books with
an emphasis on timely, accurate, and useful materials to support individual and community interests.

oversize book iconOversize These books are too big to fit on the regular shelves and too valuable not to have.

Paperbacks
Primarily a fiction Collection, these books fit easily into your
beach bag, your overnight bag, your bicycle basket. They're portable!

Pool Collection The Pool Collection is a paperback book collection
available for book discussion groups to use. There are currently ten to
twenty copies of 221 titles. If the title chosen is available it will reach our
library within 4 business days. In order to insure that a book will be
available, titles may be reserved in advance. For popular titles flexibility is
a must!

Prime time iconPrime Time The Prime Time Collection includes reference and
circulating books that deal with senior matters including eldercare,
assisted living, Medicare, financial concerns, retirement, and housing.

Professional Items designated as "Professional" include books and other
materials about the business of libraries and librarians. These resources
help us to continue to offer state-of-the-art libraries and library service.

Reference IconReference Reference materials provide timely and accurate
information on a wide variety of topics. These materials do not circulate so
that they may be available to the public at all times.

Science Fiction and Fantasy IconScience Fiction & Fantasy Imagination at its best, this
collection consists of magic and monsters, interplanetary travel and the
future. Spine labels highlight whether the book is in the realm of science
fiction or fantasy.

Short Stories The Short Story Collection includes short fiction - both
classic and contemporary tales - published in collections by one or several authors.

Test Collection iconTest Collection The Test Collection affords study guides
and practice test in a variety of fields. There are also Civil Service test
books available. All test guides are located in the Career Center. Online practice tests may be accessed from our homepage menu by clicking on the Databases heading. Once in Databases, click on Northport-East Northport Databases and then on to the Learning Express Library. Another way to access this learning platform is to click on the Weblinks heading on the toolbar of our homepage, then click on the Career heading and scroll down to the Testing subheading. These practice exams, which are instantly evaluated, may be taken in the library or at home using your library barcode.

Travel The Travel Collection includes trip-planning tips organized by
country, state, and region. Our up-to-date collection includes standards
such as Fodor's and Frommers, as well as the "off the beaten path"
publications.
