Artemis Fowl : The Lost Colony - Book 5
by Eoin Colfer
This book is about a 13 year old boy named Artimis, who is a genius
and villain. He discovers and underground world of fairies and embarks on a
mission to save the demons, by fixing their time spell. Kids ages 11-14 would
like this book.
Plot When you start this book, make sure you have a huge chunk of time to read it.
You won’t be able to put it down! I read it in two days. The plot flows very
well and is done in chronological order.
Characterization There is lots of dialogue between the characters to convey how the characters
think and interact. This is very important to this book.
Setting The setting in this book is highly descriptive, but you are so entwined with
the story, you almost don’t realize how descriptive it is while you’re reading.
Point-of-View The point-of-view is third person, which is great for this book since the
setting frequently changes from place to place and Artimis, the main character,
isn’t always present, so first person would not have been a good choice.
Style This book is a combination of sci-fi and fantasy. Any fan of either of the
two genres would love this book!
This book also stands alone from all the other books in the series. Although
you don’t have to read the first 4 books in the series you would enjoy the book
more if you did.

Firestorm
by David Klass
Firestorm by David Klass is a book about a 16-year-old boy named
Jack Daniels. He is the smartest and most athletic student in Hadley High School,
or at least he would be if his parents hadn’t held him back. All of his life he
had been told not to get the highest grades, not to score too many touchdowns in
football. He had been told to blend in and had no reason why until one night when
he had broken the high school rushing record.
He and his friends were at the Hadley diner that night celebrating Jack’s new
record when a stranger comes and looks at starts staring at him. His eyes flash
and jack sees a flash, then the stranger is gone. When he goes home he tells his
parents what happened and his dad immediately brings him into the car and starts
driving as fast as possible.
In the car ride Jack is told that his parents are not his real parents, and
that he is from the future, destined to find a mysterious object called
Firestorm, and save the future. He is told that his parents sent him back from
the future with his two guardians, which he thought were his parents. The car
comes to a stop and they both get out. They are under fire so his “dad” sends him
on his journey to find Firestorm by boat.
Along the way creatures called the Gorm, bat creatures, cyborgs, and even
other people sent back from the future attack him. He finds a large, furry,
telepathic dog named Gisco who helps him throughout his journey. Gisco is
constantly in fear of death and is trying to help Jack survive his journey to
save the future by finding Firestorm.
Throughout his journey Jack meets betrayal every step of the way. He
encounters bikers, sailors, impostors pretending to like him, and even his own
cousin sent back from the future to find and destroy firestorm so Jack can’t use
it to save the future from itself. He must crawl through caves, survive
hurricanes, fight his way out of a barn, avoid his enemies, and find Firestorm to
save the world all before the turning point, the point in time when Firestorm
stopped giving off evidence of existence and the world was doomed to a horrible
fate.
This book has amazingly descriptive writing, excellent plot development,
stunning situations, great characters, and an allover great theme. The title is
very appropriate for the book because the entire story is based on the existence
of Firestorm and how Jack must find it to save the world.
The only part of this book that is bad is the ending. It makes no sense at
all, ends the story where it should keep going, and leave the reader in a state
of confusion as to what is actually happening and with a cliffhanger that is not
as suspenseful as it should be due to the book ending at a climax.
