Our collections reflect the distinct character of our community and appeal to a wide audience of different ages and interests. The Library owns approximately 300,000 volumes in traditional book format, as well as many items which are available in audiobook, software, VHS, DVD or CD-ROM format.
Adult Collections
Adult Collections are housed in both library buildings and offer a variety of formats accessible through the library catalog. This collection reflects our Northport-East Northport community's unique identity and interests.
Art Collection
The Northport Public Library was originally designated as a repository for art resources in 1961 in a cooperative project with other county Libraries. Northport's outstanding collection, now 10,000 volumes, continues to extend its scope to include an increasingly wider range of media and materials.
Our Librarians select a wide spectrum of materials suitable for the art scholar as well as the craftsman and collector. Included in the collection today are books, journals, databases, Internet resources, auction house catalogs, career, and employment guides, and the newly inaugurated George E. Beatty, Jr. Architecture Collection.
Children's Collections
Children's Collections are housed in the Children's Room in both buildings. This collection offers a wide variety of books and other resources to our young population of library users.
Electronic Books
This collection represents over 700 titles, picked by the library staff for viewing on your computer. These complete, copyright free texts are organized by author, and can be viewed through an Internet browser.
Media Collection The Media Services Department develops and maintains the video, DVD, audiocassette, and compact disc collections. These resources are housed in the Media Centers located in each of the Northport-East Northport Library Buildings
Teen Collections
Young Adult Collections are designated with a "Y" in the call number. Most of the materials are housed in the Teen Centers, although non-fiction titles are shelved with the adult books. All of the books are identified by a Young Adult sticker on the book spine.
Special Collections
Several specialized book collections have been established as a result of generous community donations. |
