About Us

The challenge of assembling a bibliographic resource of our extensive Kerouac collection originally began in 1996. The materials in this collection are often requested and we clearly recognized the need for an annotated reference. Our recent building program had forced us to put the project back on the shelf. This spring, George Wallace, of the Northport Historical Society, came forward and met with us to describe the forthcoming Kerouac's Northport program and exhibit. He sought our cooperation on this exciting project and we committed ourselves to completing the bibliography. We thank the Northport Historical Society whose arrangement of Kerouac's Northport served as the catalyst for bringing Kerouac: Off the Shelf to fruition.

Without the reference staff, who have shared their skills and talents, this resource would never have come into being. I would like to thank Librarians Barbara Johnson, Michelle Epstein, Deborah Formosa, Angela Richards, Nancy Greenberg-Chu, Linda Bryan, Joan Tumminello, Renee Capitanio, Connie Karpf, and Suzann Ritchel for their bibliographic skills, annotating expertise, and diligent proofreading.   I am also grateful for support skills from Patty Moisan, Lillian Chaloupka, Claire Sarser, Terry Reichert, Jerry John, Erin Cressy, and the able assistance of our Technical Services Department.

The editorial committee who assisted me, Barbara Johnson, Reference Librarian who oversees the Kerouac Collection, Nancy Morcerf, Head of Reference, Mary Ellen Moll, Head of Community Services, and Eileen Minogue, Assistant Director, were instrumental in bringing this resource into print. Mary Ellen Moll, in particular, inspires us all with her extraordinary ability to take pages of words and produce beautiful final documents.

Without the assistance of renowned artist Stanley Twardowicz our collection would never have achieved its prominence. Thanks to Stanley's influence, Kerouac donated

The Town and the City typescript to the Library and Stanley was instrumental in setting up the famous Kerouac library interview. Through the years, Stanley has also willingly shared his reminiscences, as well as important photographs and documents. His generosity is sincerely appreciated.

Finally, I want to extend special gratitude to the Library Board of Trustees whose support and guidance inspires us each and every day to look for ways to bring the Library's resources into the hands of users far and wide.

Stephanie Heineman
Library Director
