Mock Newbery

The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Each year in January, the Newbery Club meets to hold a Mock Newbery Election. First, each member picks a book and states why the feel this book should win. The rest of the club votes yes or no whether the book makes it to the final ballot. Once the final ballot has been comprised, each member picks their top three books and writes them down. The book gets points depending on what place each member put it in: first, second or third. The book with the most points and first place votes wins the election. Then the club decides if they want to have Honor Books. Honor Books are usually the runners up to the winner.

Mrs. Gebel was a member of the 2006 Newbery Committee. She formed a Newbery Book Club and over thirty children from our community evaluated new books and posted reviews on the Newbery Club website.

Club members meet in January to hold a Mock Newbery election to see if they can predict what book will win the real Newbery Medal.
