About Rosemary Wells

Bunnies reading

Rosemary Wells is a versatile and popular writer and illustrator who creatively blends realism and humor in her works.  Perhaps best known for her picture books about Max and Ruby, she attributes many of their adventures to her own two children, Victoria and Beezoo.  “These simple incidents from childhood are universal,” she writes.  “The dynamics between older and younger siblings are also common to all families.”

Ms. Wells’ board books for young children premiered in 1979 with Max’'s First Word.  The author explains that she wrote these books for very young children in part because at the time there were no funny books for the very young.  Still in print, her board books continue to delight both toddlers and their parents.

Rosemary Wells has illustrated works written by Rudyard Kipling, Marjorie Sharmat, Robert William Service, and Eric Knight. Though best known for her picture books, Wells’ novels for young adults, The Fog Comes on Little Pig Feet, None of the Above, Leave Well Enough Alone, The Man in the Woods, Through the Hidden Door, and Red Moon at Sharpsburg have also won critical acclaim.  Ms. Wells is a prolific writer and illustrator and has several books published each year.
In an article written for Publishers Weekly, Rosemary Wells writes “I am firmly convinced that the story comes first.  The child may be charmed, intrigued or inspired by good illustration, but it is the sound of the words and the story that first hold the child’s attention.”
